Banca Monte dei Paschi di Siena SpA (BMPS) is Italy’s third largest bank after UniCredit Group and the Intesa Sanpaolo Group; and it’s also considered to be the world’s oldest bank. It is the main business of the Montepaschi Group, one of the biggest and oldest banking groups in Europe.
MBPS offers consumer, business, corporate and other banking services to its 6 million customers through some 2,130 local branches, 40 international branches and representative offices located abroad, nearly 300 specialized financial centers, and over 3,000 ATMs. Founded in 1472 to help the poor, MBPS operations include two separate divisions: a public institution (focused on benevolent works, public assistance, and grants) and the incorporated banking division (chiefly focused on business and profits).
It offers deposit products, mortgages, bank accounts, insurance, pension products, wealth management, mutual funds, financial advisory, leasing, factoring, and many other services. The company had total assets of EUR 169 billion as at 31 December 2015.
