About Banco BPM
Banco BPM is strongest in northern Italy, especially Lombardy, Veneto and Piedmont, and also has branches in Rome, Naples and other southern cities. It keeps its legal seat in Milan and its administrative seat in Verona, the two cities its predecessor banks came from.
Webank, one of Italy’s first online banks, belongs to the group. Banco BPM has been at the centre of Italy’s bank consolidation since 2024: UniCredit made an offer and withdrew it in 2025, and Crédit Agricole has since become its largest shareholder.
Banco BPM SWIFT/BIC and ABI codes
Banco BPM uses the SWIFT/BIC code BAPPIT21 for its head office. When a form asks for 11 characters, add XXX to make BAPPIT21XXX. Some branches and services have their own 11-character codes; if the account holder gives you one, use theirs.
The ABI code 05034 identifies Banco BPM inside every Italian IBAN. It sits in characters 6 to 10, straight after the check letter (CIN):

Using Banco BPM ATMs with a foreign card
Banco BPM ATMs accept foreign cards. Some travellers report no operator fee at Banco BPM machines, but terms change, so read the screen before you confirm.

Opening a Banco BPM account as a foreigner
Banco BPM accounts generally require Italian residency and a codice fiscale. Ask at a branch about options for non-residents before you go.
You will need a codice fiscale first. Our guide to opening a bank account in Italy lists the documents and steps.
