About BPER Banca
BPER started as a cooperative bank in Modena in 1867; the name stands for Banca Popolare dell’Emilia Romagna. Over the last five years it has grown faster than any other Italian bank by buying about 500 former UBI branches from Intesa Sanpaolo (2021), Genoa’s Banca Carige (2022) and Banca Popolare di Sondrio (2025, merged 2026).
The result is a bank with deep roots in Emilia-Romagna, Liguria, Lombardy’s Valtellina and Sardinia, plus branches across the rest of the country.
BPER Banca SWIFT/BIC and ABI codes
BPER Banca uses the SWIFT/BIC code BPMOIT22 for its head office. When a form asks for 11 characters, add XXX to make BPMOIT22XXX. Some branches and services have their own 11-character codes; if the account holder gives you one, use theirs.
The ABI code 05387 identifies BPER Banca inside every Italian IBAN. It sits in characters 6 to 10, straight after the check letter (CIN):

Using BPER Banca ATMs with a foreign card
BPER ATMs accept foreign cards. At least one traveller reported a €5 charge at a BPER machine in 2026, so check the screen carefully and cancel if the fee is higher than you want to pay.

Opening a BPER Banca account as a foreigner
BPER is one of the traditional banks that reportedly opens accounts without Italian residency. Expect an in-branch appointment, a passport, a codice fiscale and proof of address.
You will need a codice fiscale first. Our guide to opening a bank account in Italy lists the documents and steps.
