About BNL BNP Paribas
BNL was founded in 1913 and has been part of BNP Paribas since 2006. Its head office is in Rome and it has branches in every region. The group’s app-only brand in Italy is Hello bank!.
BNL is the bank American visitors ask about most, because Bank of America cardholders can use BNL ATMs without Bank of America’s $5 non-network fee.
BNL BNP Paribas SWIFT/BIC and ABI codes
BNL BNP Paribas uses the SWIFT/BIC code BNLIITRR for its head office. When a form asks for 11 characters, add XXX to make BNLIITRRXXX. Some branches and services have their own 11-character codes; if the account holder gives you one, use theirs.
The ABI code 01005 identifies BNL BNP Paribas inside every Italian IBAN. It sits in characters 6 to 10, straight after the check letter (CIN):

Using BNL BNP Paribas ATMs with a foreign card
Through the Global ATM Alliance, Bank of America waives its $5 non-network ATM fee and the operator access fee at BNL ATMs. Bank of America’s 3% international transaction fee on the currency conversion still applies.
Other foreign cards are accepted too. Travel guides in 2026 report BNL charging no operator fee in many cases, although one user reported €5 on a Mastercard, so read the screen.

Opening a BNL BNP Paribas account as a foreigner
BNL accounts generally need Italian residency and a codice fiscale. International staff are more common in BNL’s Rome and Milan branches than in smaller towns.
